Latin name - Zingiber zerumbet
Shampoo ginger, aka Pine Cone Lily, Pine Cone Ginger, and Awapuhi, is possibly the most stunning and unique of the gingers. The flowers appear within cone shaped bracts that resemble red pine cones in the late summer and fall. The bracts are filled with a clean smelling liquid that can be used as shampoo. The liquid has an excellent conditioning and softening effect on hair. Harvest the liquid once the cones have turned bright red by holding a jar under the cone and gently squeezing the liquid out. The cones will refill by the next day if not squeezed too hard. You can freeze the shampoo liquid for later use if not using right away. The liquid can also be used medicinally to treat many ailments including digestive upset, inflammation, and fever. Plant in partial sun to partial shade in moist and fertile soil. It grows 3-6 feet tall and its clumping rhizomes spread horizontally.
